What is Joint Pain?

There are many types of joint pain, one of the most common types would be arthritis. Arthritis is a condition caused by wear and tear of cartilage which leads to inflammation. The cartilage of our joint serve as a protective cushion which help us to reduce friction and absorb shock in our joints during activities of daily livings (ADL). When the cartilage lining of the joint becomes thinner, the distance between our bone will become closer leading to degeneration changes occur in our joint. Moreover, one will tend to have arthritis if he/she experienced trauma such as fracture, sprain or strain at the joint before.

After we assessed your condition, we will provide a most suitable treatment for our clients. For example, in acute condition we will provide ice pack/ cold therapy to help reduce the inflammation occur inside the joint. Then, we will also provide suitable electrotherapy such as ULTRASOUND to improve blood circulation and reduce swelling. To help reduce the pain, we will provide TENS which works through pain gate theory to serve the pain away. Nevertheless, activity modifications and patient education especially specific stretching and strengthening exercise should be delivered. We will also advice patient on wearing joint support or splint depending on individual’s condition. Throughout the process, we will always track and follow up our client’s progression to ensure their condition and symptoms are improving.

Physiotherapy Exercise Programme

Regular stretching exercises to be educated in order to maintain the flexibility of the muscles structure around the joint. Suitable strengthening exercises should be addressed to targeted muscles to improve muscle function in daily activities.

For some acute (recent) joint injuries, we advise clients to have adequate rest and reduce weight bearing activities such as mountain climbing, jogging, etc until the inflammation subsided.
