What is Stroke?

In general, there are 2 types of strokes. Clinically it is known as Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA). The sign and symptoms of strokes varies depends on the areas of brain affected. The causes of stroke are strongly associate with the circulatory system (heart and blood vessels) such as High Blood Pressure, Diabetes mellitus Or High cholesterol.

Stroke happens when there is insufficient oxygen supply to the brain cells resulting in brain cell injury / death. It can be ischemic (lack of blood flow) or hemorrhagic (sudden bleeding causes increased brain pressure and swelling). There is also a type of stroke known as TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) which would recover within first 24 -72 hours.

Patient & Career Education

Stroke patients are encouraged to monitor their own vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate) regularly at home to prevent a second attack. Constant follow up visit with doctor is essential to ensure the dosage of current medication is adequate.

For bed-ridden patients, frequent turning and suitable positioning should be educated to family members to prevent pressure ulcers.

We do provide advice on proper shoulder support or ankle foot orthosis (AFO) to prevent further complications such as shoulder subluxation and foot drop.
